Man and Van Highbury Health and Safety Policy
Man and Van Highbury is committed to providing safe, reliable and professional removal and transportation services. The health, safety and welfare of our customers, team members, visitors and the general public are fundamental to how we operate. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety across all removal and delivery activities.
Our Health and Safety Commitments
We are dedicated to maintaining high standards of safety in every part of our removals and man and van operations. To achieve this, we commit to the following principles:
We will prevent injury and ill health as far as reasonably practicable by planning our work carefully and controlling risks at their source. We will comply with applicable health and safety laws and recognised industry standards relevant to removal and transport work. We will work to continuously improve our safety performance by reviewing procedures and learning from experience. We will make health and safety an integral part of our planning, supervision, decision making and day to day activities.
Roles and Responsibilities
Health and safety is a shared responsibility and requires cooperation from everyone involved in our service.
Management is responsible for establishing safe systems of work for removals and deliveries, providing appropriate equipment, training and supervision, reviewing and updating this policy and monitoring performance, and ensuring that safety considerations are included when planning jobs, routes and staffing.
Employees and contractors are responsible for following safe working practices and instructions, using equipment correctly and reporting defects, taking reasonable care for their own safety and the safety of others, and reporting hazards, near misses, accidents and concerns promptly so that they can be addressed.
Customers also have a role in safety. Customers are responsible for providing accurate information about access, parking and any special handling issues, keeping routes within their premises clear where reasonably possible, and advising our team of any hazards they are aware of at the property.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
We carry out risk assessments for typical removal and transport activities and, where necessary, for specific jobs that present particular risks. Findings from assessments are used to develop and update our safe working procedures.
Key areas of focus include manual handling of furniture, appliances, boxes and other items to reduce the risk of strain and injury, loading and unloading vehicles safely to prevent falls, crush injuries and damage to property, working in customer homes, offices and communal spaces in a considerate and safe manner, and travelling between locations with attention to road safety and route planning.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is central to removal work and is managed with particular care. Our approach includes training our team in correct lifting and carrying techniques, using handling aids such as trolleys, dollies, straps and blankets where appropriate, assessing the weight and shape of items before moving them and asking for assistance where needed, breaking down loads into smaller, manageable parts where possible, and planning routes through properties to minimise awkward movements, steps and tight turns.
Only trained personnel may use lifting and securing equipment. All equipment is checked regularly and taken out of service if damaged or defective.
Vehicles, Driving and Road Safety
We recognise our responsibility to operate vehicles safely and to protect our drivers, passengers, other road users and pedestrians. Our measures include ensuring vehicles used for removals and transport are maintained and inspected regularly, loading vehicles so that items are secure and the weight is distributed correctly, requiring drivers to follow road traffic laws and drive with consideration in residential and busy areas, planning realistic schedules to reduce pressure and encourage safe driving, and ensuring that drivers do not work when unfit due to tiredness, illness or other impairment.
Customer Premises and Public Areas
Our activities often take place in and around customer homes, offices and shared spaces. To protect people and property we aim to maintain clear access routes wherever practical, use appropriate protection such as blankets and covers to reduce the risk of damage, take extra care on stairs, doorways, lifts and narrow corridors, and move items in a way that minimises disruption to neighbours and the public.
Where work must take place in shared or public areas, steps are taken to keep routes as clear as possible and to avoid creating unnecessary obstructions or trip hazards.
Training, Communication and Consultation
We provide information and training appropriate to the tasks carried out by our team. This includes induction training for new staff on core safety expectations and procedures, instruction in manual handling techniques and the use of equipment, ongoing guidance on vehicle safety, loading practices and working in customer environments, and briefings on any changes to methods or identified risks.
We encourage our staff to raise safety concerns and improvement suggestions. Constructive feedback is considered as part of our continuous improvement in health and safety.
Accidents, Incidents and Near Misses
All accidents, incidents, near misses and cases of work related ill health that come to our attention are recorded and reviewed. Where appropriate, we investigate to identify causes, put corrective actions in place and update our risk assessments and procedures. Our objective is to prevent recurrence and to learn from every event, whether or not it results in injury or damage.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
We monitor health and safety performance through informal supervision, formal reviews of working practices, vehicle and equipment checks, and analysis of incident records. This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed periodically and when significant changes occur in our operations, legislation or best practice for removal and transport activities. Updates are communicated to our team so that the policy remains understood and effectively applied.
Policy Availability
This Health and Safety Policy is available to staff, customers and other interested parties on request. Our intention is to ensure that everyone involved in or affected by our man and van and removal services understands the importance we place on safety and the standards we aim to achieve.
By maintaining a strong safety culture and clear procedures, Man and Van Highbury works to provide a professional, efficient and safe removal service for every customer.
